Springtime in Salem brings the Salem Arts Festival Fashion Show Fundraiser and it is my privilege to design backdrops and wearable art pieces for it. Each year has a new theme focusing on better care of our world. In keeping with this, all art pieces are constructed of 95% recycled materials. This year's theme was pollinators and the habitats that support them. I created six pieces of wearable art, each one an interpretation of a flower or shrub know to attract bees and butterflies. They are made of recycled paper bags, paint, glue, and a little wire. The backdrop pieces were conceived of as giant bouquets of wildflowers that are friendly to pollinators and were constructed of 12 pairs of recycled sheer curtains. Below are the wearable art pieces and the installation pieces can be seen above, on either side of model, Lindsey. Concept sketches are included because it brings me great satisfaction to see a thing go from a doodle to actuality. |
