Although they say that the joy is in the journey, there are events along the way that grab out attention and give us reason to pause. Whether we are doing so out of necessity or fancy we occasionally stop.
We stop for many reasons: to take pictures, to wait for others, look at birds, maps, study oddities, tie shoes, get gas, fix blisters, eat. We stop for red lights, to let others cross the road, to check our phones. We stop to window-shop and to make purchases. We stop to work, sleep, read, write, cook and clean. We stop to visit with others and to smell the proverbial roses. Robert Frost did it by the woods on a snowy evening. Sometimes we stop out of awe or reverence (stillness can be its own journey). And then we stop because we get so very tired. The stops can be small ones: a park bench or a bus shelter on a rainy day. They can be large: a piece of land on which to build a home, a city, a nation. They can be symbolic; an entire lifetime can be considered a stop depending on how you see things.
Journeys and stops: they are both part of life's rituals. We exist in this ebb and flow in tangible ways and in metaphoric ones. The motion frames the stillness while the stillness stirs dreams of action. There is procession and event, with long and winding roads leading home. We need them both.
We'd like to explore the concept of stopping and invite your visual commentary on it. Be as literal or as symbolic as you like. We are accepting 2-D and and 3-D art. See guidelines for submittal below.
